Recreation

Kaslo Event Schedule:

Vimy Park:

Vimy Park is a large green space in lower Kaslo, just across the ring road from Kootenay Lake. Recreation near Kaslo, BC contains a wonderful playground with all the usual kid stuff. It has a large covered picnic shelter that can be booked for public or private events, and a gazebo-style bandstand for all kinds of stage events. Many community events take place here through the year…like Kaslo May Days! A regular Slo-Pitch fun league runs through the spring and into the summer. There is a stunning skatepark just off the water and the municipal campground. Kaslo’s famous 2-day logger sports competition held May Days is hosted at the logger sports grounds across from the campground. iDIDaRide & Run XC Mountain Bike and Trail Running event also uses that same venue as the start for some, and the finish for all 5 of their events. There are two sets of public bathrooms located in the park as well; these are open as long as the campground is open. To reserve a camping spot, see https://kaslo.ca/p/parks-recreation or phone 250-353-2662.

Hiking and Mountain Biking:

From the Village of Kaslo a number of great hiking and mountain biking trails lead you to some beautiful places you cannot hope to get to in any other way than on foot, horseback or on two wheels. The Kaslo River Trail is lovely and easy walking and takes you over two covered bridges. Check out the Hike and Mountain Bike page here for more info on all the trails!

Skate Park:

From bikes to skateboards, the kids ride them all. This has to be the most scenic skatepark anywhere in the world – right on the beach, just north of the Kaslo river mouth.

Get your game on!

Play outside in spring, summer or fall – on your own, on a team, play with the family or with your best buddy.

Tennis: The court is located next to the Kaslo Recreation Complex on Arena Road. Non-tennis club members can get a key to the courts by stopping by at the office of the Kaslo Motel on D Avenue in lower Kaslo. The fee to play is minor and there is almost always a court available. If you don’t have racquets, birdies or balls, you will find all you require in the little shed on site.

Baseball: Grab your glove and your buddies and head down to the field at Vimy Park. Most days and times it can be your personal field of dreams.

Soccer is played up at the school (6th Street in upper Kaslo at the crest of the hill.) The pitch is not “official”, but what it is lacking in size is more than made up by the  view. There you go, yet another meaning to the phrase “The Beautiful Game” – if you are playing the sport in Kaslo!

Tee Time

At the Kaslo Golf Club there is a spectacular view at each of the 9 holes. Whether you are an experienced golfer or a beginner, there are enough nuances of play to keep you coming back to enjoy the course. Occasionally you’ll catch sight of a few deer, elk or a bear strolling across the greens, taking the shortcut to the lake. Have your camera ready! You do not usually have to pre-book tee times. There are rental clubs and pull and power carts, and motorcyclists can get free club rentals.

Winter Sports

Winter recreation in Kaslo is concentrated at the Kaslo Recreation Complex on Arena Road To get to the complex, go south 1 km up the hill from the 4-way stop in downtown Kaslo. Turn right on Balfour Avenue and stay right for Arena Road. The Complex has a hockey rink with kitchen and conference rooms; a curling rink with 2 sheets and a lounge  – all of which can be rented privately. Go to http://kasloarena.ca/ or https://kaslocurling.com  see what’s on the schedule.

Cross Country ski programs take place at the Buchanan Wilderness Recreation Area (“Bucky” to the locals.) To find out more, see our Winter Sports page here.
